Bought the wrong materials in Dressmaker
This question is huge in search and thin in official text. I can tell you what players recommend and what I refused to add: a return counter I never saw documented.
- Read the commission before you buy. Tags, colours, and trim lengths are the bill.
- Test the pattern in burlap. Community guides call it the free cloth.
- If the expensive bolt is already in the inventory, off-the-rack is the documented way to turn cloth into a sale instead of a dead stack.
- Lay pieces with the grain. Waste is the other way a budget dies.
No source I checked says the shop buys cloth back. Do not plan on a refund.
The community guide calls burlap free. A 5.00 inventory entry has no unit label and does not establish a purchase price. Check your current shop; a zero-cost strategy is not guaranteed by this site.
If a cut piece uses the wrong fabric, the community guide describes removing it with the seam ripper, returning it to the pattern tab, and scrapping it in the fabric-table basket. It says the fabric returns only if you have not cut the piece off yet. This is a player report, not a shop refund or a guaranteed recovery for every build.

Not documented as of 1 October 2026.
Is burlap free?
Community guides say yes. I have not seen a studio price list that prints zero.
